Andrew Browne is a Melbourne based Australian artist, born 1960.
He works across painting, photography and graphic mediums including drawing, photogravure, intaglio and lithography. As well he has recently re-engaged with sculpture.
Since the 1980’s he has consistently explored a visual language drawn from both the natural and the man-made environment - often through formalist collisions of style and subject - with a specific interest in both the phenomena of illumination and poetics of the nocturne. Drawn as much from the happenchance of the everyday his field encompasses, to quote the artist '...a landscape alienated from the picturesque'. Often teasing an uncanny, strange or surreal mood, his work highlights both artificiality and subjectivity, often evoking the pervasive mortality at the root of all experience. As such his practise emerges from a series of relationships that encompass direct observation, imaginative play and free association, some debt to the photographic and art historical, and a determination to continually expand his engagment with imagery via a combination of visual conumdrum and compositional poise - variously suggesting our at times ambiguous, bewildering and contradictory place within an evolving environment.
His works have variously been described as romantic, cool, eerie and spectral, uncanny, iconic, emblematic, odd and engaging. Identified as '...essentially psychic landscapes of apprehension' they often give an impression of realism whilst co-opting the multifarious languages of abstraction.
He has held numerous solo exhibitions at both dealer and public galleries over the last four decades and been curated into many group presentations at art museums and public galleries including - 'The M.C.A Collection: The Loti and Victor Smorgon Gift' 1995 and 'M.C.A Unpacked' 2001 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, 'Black Attack' 1996 and 'Shared Sky' 2009 - National Gallery of Victoria, 'The 2001, 2002 & 2011 Wynne Prizes' and 'Wilderness: Balnaves Contemporary Painting' 2010 - Art Gallery of New South Wales, 'In Passing' 2001 - Gippsland Art Gallery, 'Nocturne: Images of Night and Darkness' 2002 - Geelong Art Gallery and Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, and 'Sense of Place' 2004/5 - TarraWarra Museum of Art.
More recently his work has featured in institutional exhibitions including 'PHENOMENA' Geelong Gallery 2023, 'The McClelland Collection' McClelland Sculpture Park & Art Gallery 2023, 'COSMOS' Gippsland Art Gallery 2022/23, 'EARTH/SKY' National Gallery of Australia 2018/19, 'Every Brilliant Eye: Australian Art of the 1990's' 2017 & 'Negotiating this World: Contemporary Australian Art' 2012 - both at the Ian Potter Centre: National Gallery of Victoria, 'Analogue Art in a Digital World' at RMIT Gallery, RMIT University - 2018/19, 'Imagine' Gippsland Art Gallery, 'Collective Vision' Bendigo Art Gallery 2017, 'Panorama' at TarraWarra Museum of Art 2016, 'The 2016 Fleurieu Art Prize at the Samstag Museum of Art SA, 'Luminous World - Contemporary Art from the Wesfarmers Collection' at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (and touring through 2012-16 to venues including the National Library, Canberra, the Samstag Museum of Art in Adelaide and the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne), 'The Rapture of Death' at Gippsland Art Gallery - 2012, 'Photographic Abstractions' at the Monash Gallery of Art (and touring extensively 2012-15).
In 2016 he was the winner of the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, judged by the curator & writer Julie Ewington
In 2018 he was the winner of the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize at Geelong Gallery, as judged by Justin Paton (Art Gallery NSW), Rebecca Coates (Shepparton Art Museum) and Lisa Sullivan (Geelong Gallery).
__
His works, paintings and graphics, are represented in significant Australia-wide university and corporate collections as well as many public and institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Monash Gallery of Art, TarraWarra Museum of Art, Bendigo Art Gallery, Gippsland Art Gallery, the Parliament House Collection - Canberra and a number of regional public galleries through-out Australia.
In 2009 the British Museum in London acquired the suite of photopolymer photogravures ‘Seven Apparitions’ as part of their ongoing collection of Australian prints and works on paper.
In 1999 Bendigo Art Gallery held the survey exhibition 'Andrew Browne - Painting Light' focussing on a decade of Andrew's work, including photography, works on paper and painting.
-
In 2010 his project 'From the Periphery' featuring paintings, an associated suite of photography and an object was commissioned by McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. The exhibiton was accompanied by a 34 page hard-cover book designed by the artist in collaboration with David Lancashire Design, with essays by Peter Timms and Alan R. Dodge and included a limited edition lithograph in the initial release.
-
In May 2012 Gippsland Art Gallery presented the survey exhibition 'Andrew Browne - Horizon' focussing on aspects of his work that dealt specifically with the horizon, time and transition. Highlighting paintings and photography from the last decade, it included new works that reflected and expanded upon the key multi-panel painting from 2000 - 'Horizon', held in Gippsland Art Gallery's collection. The exhibition was accompanied by a thirty-two page fully-illustrated catalogue with an essay by the exhibitions curator Simon Gregg.
-
In 2013 Andrew received the 'Australian Print Workshop - Collie Print Trust Fellowship' and worked with the APW and its highly skilled printers to develop a new series of intaglio prints. An exhibition of these - 'Six Intaglios' - was held at the Australian Print Workshop Gallery, Fitzroy Victoria during May/June 2013.
Prints from these editions are now held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, Gippsland Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and Murdoch University.
-
In April/May 2016 Andrew's long-standing and diverse investigation of the photographic form was presented in the exhibition/installation Suddenly Slowly at the Centre for Contemporay Photography (CCP) in Melbourne.
