'ELEMENTAL'

McClelland Gallery + Sculpture Park, Victoria

31 May - 6 September 2015

"Elemental features a series of significant works that explore the patterns, forces and systems of nature, and humanity's impact upon these. This collection of works draws inspiration from and represents the natural world in contemplative, confronting and insightful ways. Some draw from the shapes and formations of which nature is comprised, offering intuitive interpretations of the environment. Others provide abstract perspectives of expansive landscapes from viewpoints unattainable by the human eye. Many seek to alter our perceptions of our natural surrounds through documentary, scientific or surreal approaches, revealing the unsustainable impacts of contemporary societies on our ecosystems. Elemental highlights the beauty, force and fragility of the earth's systems, encouraging a reverence of our intrinsic relationship to the environment.

This exhibition is drawn principally from the McClelland permanent collection, with the addition of several key works on private loan. Significantly, a number of works are being presented for the first time since their acquisition, each expanding upon McClelland's core focus of art and nature."

Featured artists include Narelle Autio, Peter Blizzard, Mike Brown, Andrew Browne, Augustine Dall'Ava, Peter Datjin, John Davis, Juan Ford, Angelina George, John Gollings, Janet Laurence, Akio Makigawa, John Mawurndjul, Anton McMurray, Dorothy Napangardi, Jasmine Targett, Neil Taylor, Wukun Wanambi, Pedro Wonaeamirri, Timothy Wulanjbirr, Gulumbu Yunupingu.

A suite of sixteen editioned black and white photographic prints 'SIXTEEN FIGMENTS' exploring urban sites and unsettling narratives - for a project at The Substation, Newport...

'Sixteen Figments'...#1

‘Figment’ refers to the fiction, fabrication and falsehood of these images, and their place in the imaginary realm… though most appear as reasonably straightforward photographs of commonplace, even banal subjects in somewhat moody lighting, they have in fact been carefully manipulated for dramatic - even theatrical - effect. Each image then is an act of creation, not unlike fictional short stories, filmic and noirish yet resistant of simple analysis. Rather, each presents curious forms and juxtapositions, some the evidence of odd, cryptic or nefarious actions or behaviours, as though contrived to confound or irritate and yet all inescapably the result of human intervention.

This group is not intended to be read in a sequence or as a cumulative narrative, yet each discreet image contains enough to imagine a complex back story, even if a present meaning or indeed ‘use’ of such images/objects remains opaque… their resonance, value and connections a creation (figment) of each individual mind.

The majority of these photographs were shot in and around Newport and the inner urban West, in late 2011. As such, they variously depict the accumulation of years of human activity and best intentions… (now) obscure and even bittersweet attempts at manipulating landscapes and objects.

Text from the catalogue for 'Purlieus'...

"Nature on the fringe of the city is the subject of this recent work. Creepers overwhelming their hosts, trees in various states of decrepitude or marked for removal, culverts and river banks strangely illuminated – giving rise to a weird and uncanny beauty. Revisiting various familiar sites and objects that have continued to engage me over a number of years (my purlieus), I seek to evoke both a psychologically charged and surreal dimension, and a specific (albeit manipulated) response to the formal qualities of the subjects.

An ongoing dialogue with art history posits interesting and surprising resonances and recognitions for me - for instance: Northern Renaissance painters concerns with humanity and nature via a fraught and gothic sensibility...the realists and impressionists radical and direct engagement with subject matter...and the troubled (neurotic?) and critical modernist and contemporary take on the landscape through quasi documentary photography and activism.

In a past piece of writing about my work, Jonathon Nichols identified beauty and its recognition as a melancholy of sorts. Returning to beauty through the melancholy of the silent observer, these paintings are evidence of that witnessing".
